Stove ban - Save our wood-burning stoves
As a business we are not political. But some people don't seem to be aware of what it means to ban stoves in rural areas. It is
-
damaging the credibility of those making the rules, when every ten years the goals and rules are changing 180 degrees (Renewable Heat Initiative = tax payers money)
-
throwing invested money down the drain (biomass-boilers, stoves, flues, accreditations)
-
ignoring that the power supply is in certain areas not always guaranteed
-
sustainably managing forests are a necessity
-
ignoring the amount of jobs adding value and top-up retirement money which is involved (farmers, forest owners, harvesters, haulers, firewood / wood-fuel producers).

Ready to Burn certificate for LFS
Ofgem is asking all the biomass suppliers (BSL) to get certified.
We decided that LFS offers BSL accredited firewood and also applied for the READY TO BURN label to make worth the additional administrative work, site inspections and laboratory tests.
LFS is certified for BSL and READY TO BURN for all the products specified as seasoned with a moisture content lower than 20%.
All locally sourced material
Dear Reader
We at LFS decided that we are not going to import hardwood (HW) from other countries (mainly Baltic countries) or transport it over huge distances. Wood is not a high-density energy product. That means for heating and energy purposes it should be used locally.
Transporting a container of 24t of logs (28t gross) over 1375mi / 2200km emits around 900kg CO2 equivalents. That just takes into account the combusting of the fuel (TTW: tank-to-wheel). The value increases to 1050kg (WTW: well-to-wake) if the fuel production is included.
If the same wood is transported without container from Elgin, Aboyne (both approx. 30mi / 48km) or elsewhere in Aberdeenshire, these values are reduced to 50kg TTW resp. 59kg WTW.
Just to put things in relation: 1kg of wood accumulates during lifetime 1.6 to 1.8kg of CO2 and releases this amount being burnt.
Therefore we recommend to burn preferably our locally grown and produced softwood and if available the hardwood from Aberdeenshire and Moray. As a result we all support our forests for our recreation and good health and the local forestry and producing businesses.
Naturally seasoned vs. kiln dried
Quite often we are asked: "Should I buy kiln dried logs?" Here are some facts:
-
1kg of softwood oven dry has a calorific value of 5.3kWh
(theoretical moisture content MC of 0%) -
1kg of firewood MC 20% or lower is about 4.3kWh
to kiln 1kg needs approximately 1kWh (-25% of energy) -
Natural drying helps to fight global warming because
-
No additional energy is used
-
Logs are always trying to reach a equilibrium with the ambient air.
-
-
The reverse process happens when the kiln dried or seasoned logs are exposed to a ambient air that contains higher humidity (fog, periods of rain). The moisture content is raising again.
 -
Years ago we experienced that kiln dried products shipped by container were affected by condensation. That is the reason why these days we only sell local grown logs and we do not sell kiln dried firewood.
Therefore kiln dried firewood may be an option if the products are not stored outside at the merchant's or at your premises (not even if sheltered from rain) and if you don't mind (financially or ecologically) about the additional energy that is used.

Softwood Spring Promotion 2024
We are happy to offer mostly high quality Larch this year for our promotion. Larch has a caloric value far closer to hardwood and is one of the best softwoods (highest calorific value) for burning.
Details and Terms & Conditions. The offer is
-
valid for all orders placed before end of May 2024
-
for unseasoned SW loose or in bags (min. 2m3)
-
at your required length (from 250mm to 600mm length)
-
delivered or self-collected
The SW logs will be seasoned by end of late summer if they are stored appropriately.

Please note: to avoid legislation and regulations for heating systems with firewood becoming prohibitive: burning green logs is inefficient, is polluting the air and damaging the stove or boiler.

-
calculate weight per cubic metre with approximately 420kg/m3.
-
SW 250mm or 300mm will be priced at
£67.50per cubic metre self-collected (save £9*) or
£83 per m3 delivered (save £9*). -

Rewarding feedback for LFS
We try to be as professional as possible. Firstly because we love this profession and secondly we like to make our customers happy by the quality of the product, the sales, delivery and payment procedures and by a fair price and to get feedback. A nice chat, a compliment or just confessions like the following are making us happy and a bit proud:
"Yes, you should have our contact details, but we haven't bought logs from you for a while because we were supplied by a cheaper lad, but his stuff was ... We should have come back much earlier."
You can't have everything for free!
